Book Review - Current Times

The Inheritance by Louisa May Alcott

Review by Rebekah

This is a captivating story of a young, orphaned woman named Edith who serves as a governess of in the home of a noble family. She was loved and favored by those around her, yet at the same time she was oppressed by the loneliness of her position. Through an engrossing turn of events, she discovers a secret from her past and finds a loyal, compassionate friend. The characters grow as the tale unravels, the plot is cleverly devised, and the story is suspenseful. Highly recommended!

Submitted by Rebekah

Ingredients:
3 cups all-purpose flour
1 cup sugar
3 tablespoons poppy seeds
1 tablespoon baking powder
2 teaspoons grated lemon rind
1 teaspoon salt
10 tablespoons butter
1 large egg
2 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
1/3 cup whole milk
1 tablespoon sugar

Position rack in top third top of oven and preheat to 375 degrees. In a large mixing bowl, combine flour, 1 cup sugar, poppy seeds, baking powder, grated lemon rind, and salt. Cut in butter with a pastry cutter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs. In a separate bowl, whisk together the egg and the lemon juice. Add egg mixture to flour mixture and cut in with a fork until moist clumps form. Add the milk in the same fashion. Using floured hands, gather the dough into ball (be careful not to over-handle dough, otherwise it may become tough) Place the ball of dough on a large baking sheet and flatten into an 8-inch round. Cut the round into eight wedges and brush with milk. Sprinkle with one tablespoon of sugar and bake until scones are golden brown, about 25 minutes. Transfer to a wire rack and cool. These scones can be enjoyed with a cup of tea!
